Getting a Good Fit: How to Measure for Compression Stockings

male with compression stockingsPrescription-strength compression stockings can successfully help manage varicose veins, alleviating pain and swelling they can cause. A good fit is important for the hose to help with symptoms.

When it comes to sizing, there is no universally accepted standard for stockings. A size medium or size 4 from one manufacturer, for example, will fit differently than the same sizes from another company. If it’s been recommended for the first time that you wear compression stockings, measuring your leg will help you select the best fit.

Use a tape measure for the best measurement. If you don’t have one, use a piece of string to determine the distance around your leg, and measure the string length with a ruler.

Knee-high stockings

Record three measurements: The smallest ankle diameter, largest calf diameter and the distance from the floor to the crease in the knee.

Thigh-high stockings or pantyhose

Record four measurements: The smallest ankle diameter, largest calf diameter, thigh diameter three inches below the buttock fold and the distance from the floor to the spot where you made the thigh measurement.

Once your measurements are recorded, refer to the sizing chart to select the correct size. It’s also important to select the correct level of compression. Compression level will vary depending on the reason for wearing the hose. Dr. Baker will discuss options with you.

Keep your compression stockings in good shape by washing them gently with soap and warm water. Avoid stretching or scrubbing them, as this will cause them to lose their elasticity.
