Paragon Surgical Specialists Welcomes Miles Tommeraasen, MD, General and Colorectal Surgeon

Paragon Surgical Specialists is pleased to welcome Miles Tommeraasen, MD, to its team of highly skilled surgeons in November 2024. Dr. Tommeraasen will offer specialized colorectal surgical care to patients in Concord and the surrounding region. He is passionate about treating patients with complex and common colorectal conditions. He brings experience and a patient-centered approach to the practice.

Dr. Tommeraasen completed his medical school education at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, followed by a general surgery residency at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He completed his fellowship in colorectal surgery at Prisma Health in Greenville, South Carolina.

“I chose colorectal surgery as my specialty because of the variety of patients and conditions I encounter,” Dr. Tommeraasen says. “As a colorectal surgeon, I have the opportunity to care for patients with colon, rectal, and anal cancers, as well as benign conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and various anorectal disorders.”

Dr. Tommeraasen utilizes various surgical techniques to ensure the best outcomes for his patients. He is experienced in minimally invasive procedures, including robotic and laparoscopic surgery, which can offer benefits such as reduced postoperative pain, smaller incisions, and shorter hospital stays. While he also performs open operations when necessary, his ultimate goal is to tailor the surgical approach to meet each patient’s unique needs.

“My philosophy towards patient care is to ensure that patients are well-informed and respected,” he explains. “I want to treat my patients like I would my own family, providing them with compassion and the understanding that they are not alone in their experience. Colorectal issues can be complex and personal, but with our team approach at Paragon Surgical, we strive to make the treatment process as comfortable as possible.”

Dr. Tommeraasen’s dedication to patient care is complemented by his research experience. At Iowa Methodist Medical Center, he worked as a Resident Research Assistant focusing on outcomes in civilian trauma populations. Additionally, while at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Dr. Tommeraasen contributed to research investigating the feasibility of endovascular navigation in trauma patients. Additionally, Dr. Tommeraasen also completed research during his fellowship that evaluated outcomes for different surgical approaches for surgical repair of rectal prolapse.

Paragon Surgical Specialists is known for its patient-first philosophy, and Dr. Tommeraasen’s values align with this commitment to high-quality, compassionate care. “What sets Paragon Surgical Specialists apart is the people,” Dr. Tommeraasen notes. “We are a tight-knit community with a shared objective of providing the best surgical care in the region.” Dr. Tommeraasen joins fellow Paragon colorectal surgeon Dr. Benny Chong, MD, FACS, FASCRS, to provide comprehensive surgical care for colorectal conditions.
