Post-surgery recovery times vary, depending on the type of surgery performed. But every patient hopes for a smooth healing time with the least amount of pain and no complications. Here are some suggestions for helping your make a full recovery.
- Follow your doctor’s post-op instructions. When you are discharged, your physician will provide specific instructions for the hours, days, and weeks after your procedure. Follow them! Even if you’re feeling better, don’t push yourself—doing so can lead to prolonged issues or infection. We are always available to answer additional questions after your surgery. We can be reached during office hours at 704-786-1108. For emergencies, pain, or urgent needs after office hours, we have a provider who can be reached at 704-512-7844.
- Ask for help. Just after surgery is not the time to prove your independence. Ask family and friends to help, allowing you time to recover. Shopping, cleaning, laundry, running errands – all chores people will be happy to assist you with.
- Start moving (carefully). As soon as you are able, get up and start walking. Movement prevents various complications, from blood clots to constipation, all of which can slow down your recovery. Start with short steps and increase to short walks.
- Eat right. A healthy diet promotes healing. Focus on foods that are packed with vitamins and minerals, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Follow specific dietary guidelines and restrictions specific to your procedure.
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids—preferably water—to help the body heal and absorb any medications after surgery.
- Don’t skip follow-up appointments. Even if you are feeling better, see your doctor as scheduled. Your physician can detect problems you might not, and follow-up tests might be necessary.
In the days following your surgery, be aware of any symptoms that may indicate complications or infection. They include:
- Fever that lasts for more than one day or is higher than 101 F
- Pain that worsens over time
- Constant nausea or vomiting
- Rapid heartbeat
